Description

The Journal of Social and Behavior Change is an interdisciplinary journal dedicated to advancing the science and practice of human behavior change.

Publications in the Journal of Social and Behavior Change presents rigorous, interdisciplinary research demonstrating significant advances in understanding, designing, and evaluating behavior change interventions and strategies at multiple scales: from individual to societal.

Submissions to the Journal of Social and Behavior Change must meet our editorial standards and undergo rigorous open peer-witnessed refereeing by experts in behavioral sciences, implementation science, and allied disciplines.

Through Genuine Open Access, Social and Behavior Change Journal provides a platform in which uncompromising scientific quality meets the highest achievable standards of open accessibility and community governance.

The Journal of Social and Behavior Change publishes rigorous research encompassing theoretical frameworks, empirical studies, intervention design, implementation science, and policy applications in social and behaviour change.

Content

The Journal of Social and Behavior Change is home to exemplary and impactful scholarship in social and behavior change; as far as content is concerned, scientific quality and practical relevance are paramount.

The format is flexible and reflects the nature of the contribution: articles may range from concise reports of innovative interventions to in-depth, mixed-methods or longitudinal studies, conceptual and theoretical advances, or integrative reviews, provided they constitute complete, self-contained units of scholarship.

The target audience includes researchers, practitioners, and policymakers in academia, government, NGOs, and international organizations working on social, environmental, and behavior change. 

Accepted papers are published continuously and can be grouped into regular issues or collections that highlight thematic domains or emerging areas within social and behavior change research.

Acceptance Criteria

To be considered for publication in the Journal of Social and Behavior Change, a submission must meet at least one of the specific expectations and all general acceptance criteria listed below (in addition to our standard author obligations):

Expectations (at lease one required)
  1. Propose novel interdisciplinary or cross-sectoral insights into behavior and social change.
  2. Demonstrate an innovative theoretical, empirical, or methodological advancement.
  3. Employ participatory, community-engaged, or co-design approaches that center behavior change interventions on stakeholders.
  4. Present a significant evidence-based application or intervention with measurable impact.
  5. Establish a synergetic link between disciplines or apply behavioral insights to new societal challenges.
  6. Contribute new models, frameworks, or strategies for applied behavior change science.
General acceptance criteria (all required):
  1. Be clearly written, conceptually sound, and analytically rigorous.
  2. Document intervention protocols, analytical procedures, and methodological choices with sufficient detail for independent replication.
  3. Contextualize findings within the broader landscape of behavior change research through comprehensive engagement with relevant scholarship.
  4. Articulate key findings, acknowledge boundaries of applicability, and identify actionable implications for research and practice.
  5. Frame the research problem clearly, establishing its significance for behavior change science and systematically presenting the study's contributions.
  6. Share data, instruments, analysis scripts, and intervention materials through appropriate channels to support transparency and reproducibility.

Submission and Editorial Process

Authors should follow the authoring guidelines to ensure seamless processing of their manuscript. The SciPost Journals Terms and Conditions apply to all submissions to the Journal of Social and Behavior Change (training).

All incoming submissions are thoroughly checked for plagiarism, and follow the peer-witnessed refereeing procedures outlined in Editorial procedure.

Minimal number of reports: at least 1 substantial report must have been received; all points raised must have been addressed either in resubmissions or in author replies before a recommendation for publication can be formulated.

All publication decisions are taken by the Editorial College (Behavior Change), following the rules set out in the Editorial College by-laws.
